November 5
It is election day. I am writing this before the polls close in Chicago – so, well before we know anything about the results of the election. As I write this, I am not sure what photo I will even lead this with. I did take a few photos canvassing the last 85 doors in Benton Harbor this morning – but I was more anxious to finish the door knocking. Friends are coming over this evening – to share our community, sisterhood, and friendships together. Nothing will surpise me tonight and in the coming days. Nothing will match the elation I felt in 2008 when Obama won the first time and I celebrated with all of Chicago in Grant Park. And nothing will match the trauma of Trump winning in 2016 when I drove back from Iowa with my radio off. I have no illusions about the millions of people who will vote for Trump today either because they believe in his hatred, racism, homophobia, misogyny and xenophobia or because they excuse it, which is pretty much the same thing. So whatever happens tonight and in the days ahead, we will fight and we will do it together with love. PS – I led with this photo with our friends who came together to share our anxiety.
