June 5

I was able to join the staff of Prairie Rivers Network (PRN) for their retreat today in the Quad Cities. After spending the morning on a barge sharing information about the work at the NWF Great Lakes Regional Center and PRN, we spent the afternoon getting to visit some cool sites on both the Illinois and the Iowa sides of the Mississippi River. So there were a lot of photos to pick from as we went out on the River on a water taxi and toured a site that recycles discarded plastic from the River and from other sources to make plastic pallets that are stronger, lighter, and recyclable. This photo was taken at Nahant Marsh on the Iowa side of the River, one of the few marsh areas that have been preserved in an area that was once filled with marshlands before levees and drain tiles. We were getting a tour of the marsh, and these staff were catching snapping turtles, measuring them and testing them for PFAS and other chemicals.
