January 27

January 27
2024: Where Is Our Humanity. Taken at Daley Plaza in Chicago.

I went to the rally and march today to demand that City Council pass a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. There have been weekly protests since the Israeli attack against the population of Gaza began, but for a variety of reasons, this was the first one I attended. I have taken so many photos at rallies, marches and protests over the years, but I selected this photo today because it speaks to the moment and is also timeless. It reminded me a photo that I took at a rainy Climate March in 2017, with another timeless message that "Decency Matters." It won't make an appearance in these daily posts since 2017 wasn't a year when I did this project – so I will squeeze that photo in here before moving on to the other January 27th photos. Humanity and decency both matter.

2017: Decency Matters. Taken near Trump Tower at the Climate March on April 29, 2017.
2020: Presenting on being an activist photographer. Taken at First United Methodist Church on Oak Park Ave. in Oak Park, IL. Paul Goyette received recognition for his photography as an activist - great photos taken in Chicago and at the border.
2018: Springtime in January. Taken on Lawrence Ave. between Central Park and Hamlin in Chicago. When it is 50 degrees and sunny in January, you sell flavored ice. He was pushing this cart west on Lawrence when I caught up with him. After I took a few photos we tried to talk about the photos but his English and my Spanish were equally poor.
2016: Closing Time. Taken on Halsted and Willow in Chicago
2012: Waiting for the cue. Taken at an SEIU reception in New Orleans
